Rescue of the Week: Five Acres Animal Shelter
For over four decades, Five Acres Animal Shelter has been a haven for homeless dogs and cats in St. Charles, St. Louis, and surrounding areas. The lone no-kill shelter in St. Charles County (as well as the area's only shelter which has created a designated area for cats living with FIV and FeLV), the non-profit organization provides comfort and care for companion animals who have been relinquished by their guardians and helps to transfer pets who are facing their fate in overcrowded shelters.
Special Programs
Along with giving dogs and cats in need a taste of the good life at the facility, through the AniMeal Pet Food Pantry Five Acres Animal Shelter also helps to keep pets parents facing financial difficulties with the pets they love.
Annual Events
Each year pals to those with paws can take steps to create a better tomorrow for animals in need with each step they take during Trails for Tails, a 10K run, 5K run and one-mile walk along the riverfront and Katy Trail. The fall fundraiser also includes fun canine competitions, a raffle and vendor booths.
Celebrity Supporters
A number of notables have used their star wattage to shine a spotlight on Five Acres Animal Shelter by paying a visit to the canines and cats in the organization's care, including NFL stars Jake Long and Jermelle Cudjo of the St. Louis Rams, and St. Louis Blues captain/Athletes for Animals co-founder David Backes gave an assist to the non-profit by leading the Athletes for Animals team during the 2014 edition of Five Acres' Trails for Tails fundraising walk.
Adoptable Dog and Cat of the Week
While Five Acres Animal Shelter has famous fans, the organization's true stars are the facility's temporary, tail-wagging residents, such as Soda, a bubbly young Australian Cattle Dog mix currently in foster care, who is DogTipper's #PawPromise Adoptable Dog of the Week:
...and Hollywood, a tabby cat who is hoping to land a starring role in the heart and home of a loving pet parent, and is CatTipper's Adoptable Cat of the Week:
